A 67-year old woman and her granddaughter were yesterday afternoon rushed to a private hospital in the city with burns about their body after another relative threw a pot of ‘boiling’ dhal in their direction.
Rampiwarie Puran of Prospect, East Bank Demerara and her 17-year old granddaughter Samantha Roopnarine sustained burns to various parts of their bodies during the incident.
The elderly woman told Stabroek News from her bed at the Woodlands Hospital that she and other relatives were chatting at her home around 3 pm yesterday when one of her grandsons, whom she noted was recently released from prison, “start behave bad”. She said the man, whom she also described as an addict, was intoxicated and other relatives attempted to “send he home”.
She said the man then picked up a cutlass and attempted to chop another relative but it was soon wrestled away from him. However, she noted the man ran into the kitchen and hoisted the pot of “hot..boiling” dhal off the stove and threw it in her direction.
Puran said that she attempted to run away from the scene but the liquid caught her in the head and streamed down her left shoulder. In pain, the woman stated that Roopnarine felt the brunt of the attack as she was sitting when the liquid was thrown on her.
She said the assailant spent three years in prison following break and enter charges and she noted that he would frequently assault his father since he was released from prison last month.
Puran said that she was expected to be discharged from the hospital last evening but her granddaughter was admitted to the medical institution as her burns were said to be severe.
The matter was reported to the Providence Police Station but when the officers arrived at the scene the assailant escaped. The elderly woman told Stabroek News that the police should arrest her grandson, since according to her, “he is a dangerous person to have around”.
