A 55-year-old father accused of a $400,000 theft was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The allegation is that on August 5 at Georgetown, Selwyn Gillis broke and entered the shop of Parbattie Ali and stole two DVD players valued $50,000 along with $60,000 cash. He also allegedly stole a quantity of drinks and other food items valued $478,700.
Gillis pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny when it was read to him by the magistrate.
He was also jointly charged with his son who was absent from court. No mention was made about the younger Gillis’ absence from court.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford made an application that the accused be remanded to prison because of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. The unrepresented Selwyn Gillis was subsequently remanded to prison until August 17 for reports.
