Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc yesterday donated a number of wheelchairs to the Ministry of Health, Ptolemy Reid Rehab Centre, Cheshire Home, Mahaica Hospital, Palms and Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri and sewing machines to the Women Across Differences (WAD) organization.
The charitable organization said in a press release that it donated the wheelchairs for adults and children in order to minister to the growing mobility needs of the differently-able wards of those establishments.
Many patients and residents of these institutions are incapable of walking as a result of cerebral palsy, and other medical conditions. Consequently, the wheelchair becomes a vital transport mechanism.
WAD is a non-governmental organization that enables women, primarily from 13-19 years old, to empower themselves through access to social and economic resources, and to work to reduce poverty at community levels. The organization also seeks to equip youth with life skills and to improve the general welfare of children. The sewing machines will be useful to the micro-enterprise endeavours of WAD, the release noted.
In addition, recipients received donations of commodes, crutches, walkers, mattresses, blankets, comforters, medical supplies, food charts, food items, and clothing, among other items.
