A man accused of setting his family house on fire was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $30, 000 when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The defendant was not required to plead to the indictable charge of setting fire to dwelling house when it was read to him by the Magistrate.
The allegation is that on August 7 at Grove, East Bank Demerara, Krishendat Mahadeo, a handyman at the Grove Police Station unlawfully and maliciously set fire to the dwelling house of Navray Mahadeo.
The defendant told the court that he did not set fire to the house but rather it was a lit candle that fell and caused the fire. The man who explained that the house is a family property told the court that he would never intentionally set fire to the building.
“Me in mad fuh bun down de house I living in,” the man said.
The accused who pleaded with the Magistrate to be granted bail was later granted his request when he was placed on $30,000 bail.
The prosecution had no objection to the bail application. The defendant was ordered to return to court on November 2.
