A man accused of stealing a quantity of clothing was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that between August 8 and 9 at Parika, Anthony Brown stole a quantity of male and female clothing valued $600,000, property of Federick Russel.
The defendant was not required to plead to the indictable charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by the magistrate.
The virtual complainant was not in court.
The prosecution objected to the accused being granted bail.
The magistrate who initially granted the prosecution’s application withdrew it and asked the defendant if he wanted to be “placed on some bail.”
“Yes,” Brown replied anxiously. The magistrate then asked the accused to inform the court of his address and he said that he resides at Bartica.
“That’s a big place,” the magistrate responded, be more specific , she advised. Brown then gave his address as One Mile Potaro Road, Bartica. Again the magistrate said “that was a big place.”
Unable to give the court a specific lot number the magistrate cautioned the defendant that she was no longer going to consider granting him bail.
The prosecution’s application was once again granted.
The unrepresented Brown was later remanded to prison and his matter was transferred to the Leonora Magistrate’s Court for August 13.
