Guyana Elections Commis-sion (GECOM) Chairman Dr Steve Surujbally recently gave a detailed account of the Commission’s recent major activities to acting British High Commissioner Simon Bond.
According to a press release Surujbally also gave an update on other activities GECOM is undertaking in the lead up to the General and Regional Elections set for 2011, after Bond paid a courtesy call to his office. The Chairman also spoke about the new Register of Regis-trants that had been completed in preparation for the Local Government Elections on April 19 and the laying of the groundwork for the recommencement of Continuous Registration in September.
In response the High Commissioner gave assurances that his government was cognizant of GECOM’s commitment to and administering of the 2006 elections in a peaceful and efficient manner and of its efforts “aimed at ensuring all future elections are held in compliance with the highest principles governing the electoral process and associated with international best practices.” Bond also said the UK remained committed to assisting Guyana with preparations for the administering of elections.
