The Ministry of Education is constructing three new schools in Region Three at a total cost of $176.5M.
According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), the schools are being built at Belle West, Parfait Harmonie and Tuschen on the East Bank of Essequibo, at a cost of $49.2M, $59.3M and $68M, respectively. Region Three Vice-Chairman Manpersaud said the regional administration is currently procuring furniture for the schools at a cost of $12M.
Additionally, acting Chief Education Officer (Primary) Fhariman Ali was quoted as saying that the schools are C-graded, which indicate that just over 100 students will be enrolled. She said they are situated in the housing schemes due to the large number of residents in those communities, in keeping with the ministry’s policy to make education accessible to all communities.
According to GINA, under the region’s capital works programme for 2010, 10 schools were slated for rehabilitation. Manpersaud noted that works at the Kawall Primary School at Canal No.2 has been completed and the renovation of the remaining schools in the district is more than 60% complete. He also noted that the region is monitoring rehabilitation projects to ensure that all the schools are ready for the new school year.
