Guyana recorded their second win of the men’s indoor Pan American hockey championships in Venezuela when they defeated Peru 4-2 in a thrilling encounter in the first game of day four of the championships in Barquisimeto.
The Guyana team was coming off a big win over host, Venezuela in the last game on day three.
Against Peru the Guyanese scored in the sixth minute but Peru quickly tied the match off a penalty corner goal.
The Guyanese capitalized on a penalty corner miss by Peru to score again and take a 2-1 lead which was stretched to 3-1 at half time following a field goal.
Despite the half-time score, Peru had more attacking opportunities in the first half.
The second half began with possession even between both teams and though Peru received multiple corners, they just could not make the conversion.
Midway through the second half Guyana’s Robert France had Peru’s `keeper Felix Mafferetti beaten but the shot crossed the entire length of the goal.
France was not to be denied a second time, however and scored in the 35th minute to put Guyana ahead 4-1.
A few minutes later, Peru scored off another penalty corner with two minutes remaining.
Neither team was able to score again and the Guyana team was able to record its second successive win. (Kizan Brumell)
