-‘I will change my life’
Nanda Latchman, the Cummings Lodge woman who was allegedly stabbed by her reputed husband during the early hours of Sunday morning, has been discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and she is determined to change her life.
Latchman, 37, was stabbed to her left shoulder after which her husband set their home on fire and rushed to the front verandah from where he jumped to exit the building. Shortly after the incident, the man was arrested. He remained in custody up to press time last night and he is expected to be taken before the court either today or tomorrow morning.
When Stabroek News visited Latchman at the GPH yesterday afternoon, the woman was preparing to leave with her sisters and son. She told this newspaper that she was still in some pain but was happy to be alive. “I am going to start listening to the advice of my family and my Church and I will change my life,” the woman said.
Latchman, speaking with this newspaper on Sunday afternoon, had said that her husband left for a “wedding house” on Saturday night with some relatives and returned home at about 1am this next morning drunk. The man, she explained, started to verbally abuse her after she reprimanded him for spilling some seasoned chicken on the kitchen floor.
Latchman was sitting in the living room watching television when she alleged that the man approached her from behind and stabbed her in the back.
Police, in a press statement, later said that Latchman, of 213 South Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, “was reportedly stabbed to her left side shoulder by her husband during an argument.
It is alleged that her husband then set the home on fire which resulted in the destruction of some furniture and damage to the walls of the house.” The fire, according to police, was extinguished by neighbouring residents who formed a bucket brigade.
