Dear Editor,
I wish to draw your attention to a serious housing problem that faces persons with disabilities.
All over the world persons with disabilities fall below the poverty line, and therefore cannot own their own homes. I have commended the government which tried to address this problem by giving some of us house lots. There are organizations which may help a few and promise others help; however, the wait is long and very frustrating for persons whose situations are dire.
Independent living is one of the principles for disabled people. It is important for them to be able to do things for themselves even though some of them live in institutions whilst others live with relatives.
I am calling on the Ministry of Housing to make funding available for disabled persons who have been given house lots. Given the financial situation of the disabled, I sincerely hope that the government does not implement its policy of repossessing unoccupied land.
Yours faithfully,
Laurie Greenidge
