TORONTO, Canada, CMC – Trinidadian jockey Richard Dos Ramos shocked Woodbine on Sunday when he pulled off a stunning upset with longshot Miami Deco to capture the CAN$500 000 Breeders’ Stakes.
Going off at odds of 60-1, Dos Ramos raced the three-year-old colt near the rear of the pack before rallying him on the far turn and getting up to win by three-quarters of a length in a time of two minutes, 34.24 seconds.
The victory was Dos Ramos’ third success in the in what is the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, after winning 24 years ago with Carotene and in 2008 with Marlang.
“I stayed on the rail most of the way, until I needed some room to make a run,” the 47-year-old Dos Ramos said.
“When I thought I had a shot to get out a little bit, to give my horse a shot to win the race, I started picking up horses very quickly, and I didn’t want to pick them up too quick.
“When [Stormy Lord] drifted out in the lane, I dropped back to the inside, and then my horse picked up the bridle and went on with it.”
Three-to-one bet Stormy Lord finished second while hot favourite Cognashene finished third.
