Guyana’s participation in the World Youth Olympic Games (YOG) did not begin on a lustrous note as swimmer Henk Lowe suffered critical losses in the 400m freestyle on Sunday and the 200m freestyle yesterday at the Singapore Sports School, Singapore.
On Sunday, swimming in the first heat it was evident that Lowe was not at his best, as he struggled to keep up with the other national swimmers.
Swimming out of lane five, Lowe finished the 400m in five minutes, 9.04 seconds to come in fourth.
The heat was won by Venezuela’s Cristian Quintero, who took three minutes and 54.91 seconds.
Allan Gutierrez of Honduras placed second in four minutes, 8.62 seconds lan Gutierrez Castro of Honduras his second place win, while third place went to Ecuador’s Jorge Masson who clocked four minutes and 8.80 seconds.
Lowe’s return to the pool was a challenge for the 16- year-old who worked his way to a fifth place finish in the 200m.
Once again in lane five, Lowe finished in two minutes and 23.43 seconds.
Guyana’s participation in the meet is scheduled to continue tomorrow with athlete Chavez Ageday participating in the 100m heats.
On Thursday, athlete Jevina Straker will contest the 1000m heats.
