RIO DE JANEIRO, (Reuters) – The top election official in a northeastern state of Brazil was wounded yesterday when gunmen fired at his car in an assassination attempt, the country’s electoral authority said.
Luiz Antonio de Mendonca, president of the Regional Electoral Tribunal in the small state of Sergipe, was hit by bullet fragments in the attack that took place yesterday morning in state capital of Aracaju.
Mendonca was only lightly wounded and was in stable condition in hospital along with his driver, who was more seriously hurt, the president of the national electoral court told reporters in Brasilia.
