BOGOTA, (Reuters) – Colombia’s air force bombed a rebel camp yesterday, killing seven leftist guerrillas from a small insurgent group in the northwest of the Andean nation, the country’s military said.
Latin America’s No. 4 oil producer has seen a dramatic fall in violence over the past eight years thanks to a U.S.-backed offensive that has battered rebels.
Colombia’s military said the air force bombed a camp of insurgents from the National Liberation Army, or ELN, 217 miles (350 km) northwest of the Colombian capital, Bogota.
“A precision air operation by the Colombian Air Force resulted in seven dead terrorists,” it said in a statement.
The ELN has fewer than 2,000 fighters. It has been decimated by the army and clashes with the nation’s largest rebel group, the FARC.
