Two suspects have been arrested following the murder of Karia Karia businessman John Paul last Thursday.
The men, Stabroek News understands, are currently being questioned by police and may be put on an identification parade shortly. A senior police source, who spoke with this newspaper last night, said that the men have been in police custody for close to 48 hours.
Paul, 63, who operated a snackette and sold fuel to boat operators in the area, was shot and killed during a robbery which occurred at about 8.30 that night. His reputed wife, Sahodra Persaud, was also terrorised by the bandits.
Persaud, in company of relatives, journeyed to the Police Station at Anna Regina where she gave a statement yesterday. The woman, also speaking with Stabroek News via telephone last night, said that she was not aware that police had arrested two men.
“I de want see how dem going to find these man dem but if dem find two then that is good…no dem na ask me to identify anybody yet,” the woman said.
Persaud said that she was still in shock and the only thing on her mind was getting the funeral over with. A post-mortem, she further said, was conducted on her reputed husband yesterday but she was yet to collect the results.
Police in a press release had said that three men carried out the attack. This was later confirmed by Paul’s widow. Investigations, they’d reported, have revealed that the men approached Paul under the pretext of purchasing fuel.
It was under this cover that they held-up the businessman at gunpoint.
A scuffle ensued and Paul was shot to his abdomen. He was taken to the Suddie Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
