Finishing third in his heats with a timing of 11.09 seconds, Guyana’s Chavez Ageday yesterday did his county proud as he advanced to the finals of the boys 100m finals at the World Youth Olympic Games currently ongoing in Singapore.
Running in heat three, Ageday took to the track yesterday morning to cop a spot behind Jamaica’s Odane Skeen whose ‘Bolt’ like performance saw him storming past the finish line in 10.63 seconds. Second place went to Thailand’s Jirapong Meenapra, who clocked 10.72 seconds to overtake the Guyanese.
Ageday finished third in a heat that began with six competitors after two were disqualified for false starts. His performance placed him twelfth overall in an event that featured a starting list of 38 participants.
Currently leading the category is Britain’s David Bolarinwa, with a mere 0.01 seconds lead ahead of Ageday’s adversary, Skeen.
With yesterday’s performance Ageday became the second of Guyana’s four participants to compete in the third event. Ageday’s accomplishment follows the performance of Guyana’s swimmer Henk Lowe, who represented Guyana in the 400m and 200m freestyle races on Sunday and Monday respectively.
Ageday is scheduled to polish off his performance in the finals on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s two-time CARIFTA gold medalist, Jevina Straker, will today get her chance to display her capabilities when she performs in the girls 1000m qualifiers. Straker, who specializes in the 800m and 1500m distances, will vie against 16 other contenders in her heats as she pursues a gold for Guyana.
Despite not being accustomed to the 1000m distance, Straker before her departure from Guyana affirmed that this would in no way affect her effort.
