Guyana’s two-time CARIFTA Games gold medalist Jevina Straker on Monday finished fourth in her ‘B’ finals of the girls 1000m at the World Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
According to results from the Games website, Straker clocked 2:57:41 seconds being edged for third place by Cuba’s Dayrina Sotolongo who clocked 2:56:74s.
The winner was Morocco’s Manal El Behraoui, who clocked 2:53:87s with Botswana’s Winnie George, 2:55:46 in second place.
There are no medals for the top three athletes since the performers in the ‘A’ finals ruled the overall event.
The gold medal was won by Ethiopia’s Tizita Ashame who clocked an unprecedented 2:43:24s to take her first and only gold medal of the games, while establishing a new personal best time for the race.
Switzerland’s Adrina Schlaepfer took the silver medal in 2:43:84s.
Known for its prestigious performances in the middle and long distance arena, Kenya took the last medal position through Damaris Muthee who secured a personal best performance by clocking 2:47:09s.
Straker who clocked 3:8:19s on Thursday when she placed 12th in Heat 1 and 19th overall, climbed three rungs up the rankings and is now 16th among the 33 participants.
This was inspite of the inclusion of Behraoui, George and Garcia, back into the event. On Thursday, both George and Garcia were reportedly disqualified from their heat while Behraoui ranked second in the first heat seemingly did not finish the race.
Straker’s performance was preceded by that of Chaves Ageday, who placed fourth in the “B” final of the boys’ 100m with a time of 10.90 seconds.
He ended 12th out of the 38 participants.
Straker and Ageday’s results were the best of the four Guyana representatives at the inaugural event.
National swimmer Henk Lowe’s performances in the 200m and 400m freestyle events were not among his best displays.
