The suspect in last Sunday’s stabbing of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara mother of two Trishwari Ramdhary has turned himself in to the authorities.
Stabroek News was told that the 25-year old man, accompanied by a lawyer, was handed over to police at the Cove and John Police Station yesterday. He is expected to be charged shortly.
The man’s sister, who was present at the scene on Sunday when the stabbing occurred, was taken into police custody on Tuesday and the woman is expected to face aiding and abetting charges, a source informed yesterday.
The suspect allegedly inflicted at least seven stab wounds to Ramdhary on Sunday morning at Enterprise on the East Coast of Demerara, after the couple argued about custody rights of their two children, a seven-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl. The couple separated two years ago after a tumultuous relationship.
Ramdhary was yesterday recuperating at the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital from the stab wounds she sustained to various parts of her body, including her shoulders, hands, chest and legs. Ramdhary moved to Enterprise only the day before the attack to live with someone she met recently. Ramdhary’s mother said that her daughter suffered physical abuse at the hands of her husband. After the two separated, Ramdhary moved in with her sister, who assisted her in taking care of the children. Relatives believe that it was after she started seeing someone recently, her husband became annoyed.
Gangaram Ramlall, Ramdhary’s new partner’s father, said that the suspect’s intention was to “kill she but she lucky she still alive.” Ramlall told Stabroek News on Sunday that Ramdhary went out to the yard willingly, in order to speak to the man but the two began arguing over who should keep the children. He said he was sitting in his house when, a few minutes later, he heard the young woman screaming for help. Ramlall said when he ventured out to see what was causing the commotion, he saw the suspect plunging a “long knife” into the woman’s body.
He said that the man, after stabbing the young mother, picked up a bicycle and rode out of the village as residents gathered and pursued him. He escaped in the nearby cane fields. The woman was rushed to the hospital in an unconscious state while another relative reported the matter to the Vigilance Police Station.
