The body of the victim of Monday morning’s accident on the Providence, East Bank of Demerara Public Road has been identified as 56-year old Dindyal Chetram of First Street, Grove, EBD.
Police had stated in a release that they were investigating a fatal accident which occurred some time around 1.20 am on Monday. Investigations revealed that motor car PLL 2595 was proceeding along the roadway when it is alleged that a pedestrian attempted to cross the road and was struck down. The driver was later taken into custody.
The man’s sister Radika Chetram told this newspaper last evening that she and another relative identified her brother’s remains at the Georgetown Public Hospital morgue on Wednesday. She said that the family began to get worried when calls made to the usual locations where her brother would frequent came up empty-handed.
She explained that Dindyal would frequent her home and that of another relative on the East Coast of Demerara. She said on Sunday, she left the man at a wedding house on the West Coast of Demerara and he was expected to visit her the following day. She said he lived at a location on the EBD where he worked on a chicken farm.
The woman noted that after he did not turn up at her home on Monday she began to make enquiries and someone advised her to visit the public hospital. She said persons there told her that a man who resembled her was at the morgue and according to her, her worst fears were later confirmed during the visit.
Dindyal Chetram is expected to be buried later this week.
