Dear Editor,
One could not help but be bemused at the image of innocent pride exuded recently by the young man on TV put to announce the ‘early’ distribution of pensioners’ books, as if applause were to be expected for what was in fact a routine service.
Of significance was the forgivable aplomb with which the salesman asserted that despite the (apparent) small monthly dole, about which there was much carping, the cost to the administration was an impressive number of millions of dollars.
His innocence seemed hardly privy to the fact that the pensioners’ $6,300 per month was subject to VAT; and like economically better placed citizens, they are also subject to the same utility rates.
So hopefully the young optimist and his colleagues attending human services may wish to reflect on the extent to which the dole contributes to their clients’ social security.
Yours faithfully,
E B John
