Dear Editor,
With regard to the present debate on President Bharrat Jagdeo’s visit to the community of Buxton, the myopic posture adopted by many politicians and social commentators left much to be desired.
The fact is President Jagdeo has a right like every other citizens of this country to visit any community. However given the complex nature of the village of Buxton the President’s visit should not have been a walk in the park. The villagers should have used the opportunity to express their disappointment in previous postures of the PPP administration towards the community, outline the present difficulty the community is facing, and make comprehensive recommendations for solutions. It is from this perspective that the organizers should be chided.
They should have used the just concluded reunion and village celebration to develop projects to address the social, economic and infrastructural problems of the community. Buxton needs much more than political rhetoric and a political turf war. The community needs a structured developmental programme developed by the residents for the residents.
So all the politicians and social commentators should stop giving the President’s visit to Buxton more media coverage than was intended or deserved.
Instead they should use the time and space to keep the debate of political consensus to ensure a people’s victory at the next elections so that Buxton and all of Guyana will realize its true potential
Yours faithfully,
Bevon Currie
