Dear Editor,
Having read the article ‘Public Service Commission appointments not based on proper consultation -GPSU,’ in the Stabroek News of August 27, can the Alliance For Change (AFC) say why the party’s representative, Ms Sheila Holder, voted for the appointments of Carvil Duncan of the Guyana Labour Union (GLU) and Cecil Seepersaud of the Public Service Senior Staff Association (PSSSA) to be two of the members to the Public Service Commission (PSC)?
Does the AFC understand the role and responsibility of the PSC? Is the AFC aware that the public servants who will be affected by the decisions of the PSC are represented by the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU)? Did the AFC consult the GPSU before it made its decision? Why did the AFC support the PPP in shutting out the GPSU from the PSC?
According to the news item the “GPSU said it was forced to conclude that the GLU and PSSSA were specifically injected into the process for convenience with the intention of undermining its position and status, ‘in keeping with the ulterior and in our opinion unprincipled posture of the government.’”
The anguish over the PPP and AFC’s action and what it means for public servants is best represented in the GPSU statement which said: “There is a crying need for restoration of equity and fairness in the system in order to ensure that public servants falling under the jurisdiction of the PSC are treated fairly and equitably.”
Yours faithfully,
Humphrey Charles
