The inaugural Kashif and Shanghai-organized President’s Cup International Friendly matches between the senior and Under-20 football teams of Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago is scheduled for September 26.
The matches between Guyana’s Golden Jaguars and Trinidad’s Soca Warriors and Guyana’s Under-20 and Trinidad’s Junior Warriors will take place at the Guyana National Stadium.
Yesterday, the Directors of the organization, Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major along with President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Colin Klass held a press briefing to inform the public what steps have been taken so far in putting together the event.
In Muhammad’s brief remarks he said that over the next few weeks their organization will be embarking on an ‘emotional journey’ to let the Guyanese public know who the players are that will be representing them.
“The GFF supports the venture they have come up with and I think this also is a way to see where Guyana is on the international stage. It will be a lot of work to complete in a short space of time in preparation but we will be ready since we are not prepared to lose at home,” said GFF president Colin Klass.
“I believe the way for our football to develop is having international exposure … to compete and derive the best possible team to represent us at a higher level,” he further said.
The competition, he said, was timely since Guyana’s football season has recently resumed and it will better help in the preparation for the upcoming Digicel Cup and other international competitions.
Klass also disclosed that they are working towards turning the September 26 event into a triple header and are awaiting confirmation from a Surinamese National Under-17 squad to oppose another junior Jags team.
The long-standing GFF president also said that a number of overseas-based Guyanese players will be arriving in Guyana to join the local players in the squad to represent their country.
They include Christopher Bourne, Walter Moore, Howard Newton, JP Rodrigues, Alinani Mounter, Shawn `Bubbly’ Beveney, Fabian Brown, Chris Nurse, Sean Cameron, Jake Newton, Ricky Shakes, Jason Lloyd, Gregory Richardson and Gamaal Breedy.
