Dear Editor,
Since micro-management has been the order of the day in Guyana, it is no wonder the Minister of Education is comfortable in the role of announcer of exam results and which student is first and which school second. The Chief Examinations Officer should present the results followed by a preliminary analysis by the Chief Education Officer, and then the Minister’s role should be outlining what steps the government may be contemplating in relation to addressing areas for improvement.
Following on the correction from GHK Lall in the SN, August 28 ‘Marian Academy was the top performing private school…’ I know at least one private school which obtained 100% passes between grades 1-3 in all subjects entered at CSEC, whilst five students had previous grade ones in Mathematics. Those students passed all their current subjects between grades 1-2. All of the students of the class of 2010 of the New Guyana School have now properly matriculated from Form 5.
The Minister should stick to policy, rather than wanting to be a TV-style commentator.
Yours faithfully,
Ralph Benjamin
