Dear Editor,
It is now apparent that the Guyana Times has joined forces with the state-controlled radio, the Guyana Chronicle, Channel 11 and some other television stations, as we sink to the lowest level of journalistic impropriety. The citizens of Linden only see state television, and hear the state radio.
After our return to democracy and talk about freedom of information, I share a recent experience.
I responded to a letter by Rev Gideon Cecil, which contained misconceptions and inaccuracies about the economy and rice flour, published prominently only by the Guyana Times approximately two weeks ago (August 19). I sent a reply to Rev Cecil’s letter, and spoke with the Editor, Mr Nigel Williams, of Guyana Times. After days lapsed, my letter was still not published by Guyana Times; instead, another letter by K Kallicharan on the same subject, containing inaccuracies and a personal attack on me, was published by Guyana Times.
After it was suggested to me that the real decision-maker about which letters should be published was the top brass and not the Editor, I made efforts to reach Mr Ramroop, but these proved futile. Instead I was directed to speak to a Ms Rosalinda Rasul, who appeared to be the conduit. The lady said she had not seen my reply, so on Wednesday, another copy was duly dispatched to her.
All some of us ask for, is truth and justice. But long ago we learnt that who pays the piper calls the tune. However Pope once said, “Who pants for glory finds but short repose; A breath revives him, or a breath o’erthrows,” The time has come for all good people who seek justice and truth to marshall their forces to resist this hegemony; clearly, we are being encircled by a new wealthy group with no interest in justice and the truth.
Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green JP
