Three men along with the reputed husband of Omadevi Singh, who was found dead in a Skeldon backdam canal on Sunday morning, remained in police custody up to press time and police have hauled in two more relatives for questioning.
A senior police source told Stabroek News that Singh’s spouse had been taken into custody again so that he could be interviewed again based on additional information that had become available to police during investigations.
Singh was last seen alive on Saturday night at a family gathering a short distance from her Line Path, Skeldon, Berbice home. The woman, relatives said, left the ‘get-together’ and said she was going for a walk at about 7 that night. She never told relatives where she was going.
Passers-by discovered Singh’s body in the canal, not too far from her home, at about 8 am on Sunday. An alarm was immediately raised and relatives eventually made there way to the scene where they identified Singh as the dead woman.
It wasn’t until Monday, when a post-mortem examination revealed that Singh died from manual strangulation, that it was confirmed that she was murdered. Police arrested the three suspects shortly after her body was found.
On Sunday, Singh’s husband had been held in police custody so that he could give them a written statement. Sometime around 6 pm on Tuesday police again escorted the man from his Line Path home where Singh’s wake is being held.
The 34-year-old housewife lived with her reputed husband and five children.
Singh’s sister-in-law, who declined to be identified, said that it was her birthday party the woman was attending. Police, the woman said, took two of her sons into custody for questioning yesterday afternoon as well.
“They na say why they carrying de boys…they say they got some questions for dem and they jus’ carry them to the station,” she said.
Meanwhile, she explained that the canal where Singh was discovered dead runs along a dam in Line Path. The area is extremely dark at night and there are no houses located at that section of the dam.
