Dear Editor,
I refer to the letter by Julianne Gaul ‘The interview with Mr Corbin was very revealing’(SN, August 31).
It is not surprising that Ms Gaul who is part of a faction of PNCR members bent on carrying an anti-Corbin campaign over a leadership issue already settled since 2009 would fail to be in favour of anything Mr Corbin says. Ms Gaul’s jaundiced outlook comes as no surprise to those who know her motive is to bring the leadership into disrepute.
All are aware of the disciplinary committee of the PNCR. As with most disciplinary committees these deal strictly with matters related to behaviours inimical to the interest of the party. Challenges for leadership can hardly ever be construed as actions warranting disciplinary measures, hence to claim otherwise is either purely mischievous, downright silly, or intended to mislead. A simple litmus test is to find out what disciplinary measures or committee those who challenged Corbin for leadership in 2009 or prior to it were made to face. Have Mr Murray, et al faced a disciplinary committee? Ms Gaul should say.
The PNCR is a party built on democratic values and its members who are expected to be savvy ought to know their role and functions as party members. Mr Corlette, apart from being a PNCR politician, is a member of the regional government and holds the position of Region 4 Chairman. He represents all the people of Region Four and has a working relationship with all political parties and government officials towards the fulfilment of regional goals. Mr Corbin as Leader of the Opposition should also enjoy that same courtesy if and when he enters into any PPP/C stronghold.
Those who condemn his presence at a meeting where President Jagdeo was hosted in his capacity as President are hypocritical, for Mr Corlette’s loyalty remains to the PNCR and its policies and his actions remain consistent, unlike those who condemn and are taking to a public platform to discredit and undermine the very party they claim to care about.
Instead of taking time to spew misinformation and sow seeds of disunity in the party, she should be advising herself and her comrades to desist from destroying the very party they want to lead.
Yours faithfully,
B Beniprashad Rayman
