The Guyana Tapeball Association’s inaugural Super Sixes, seven-a-side tapeball cricket competition was officially launched in the Everest Cricket Club (ECC) ground pavilion yesterday.
The tournament gets underway Sunday with a large number of matches across the country and concludes on October 10 under lights at the same venue.
Present at the launching was Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, who commended the GTA for the initiative of hosting the competition.
Kumar, who also expressed thanks to the various sponsors, said that government was always committed to the development of sport.
Kumar also declared himself happy with the way the association was getting players actively involved following the hosting of the GT&T nationwide softball competition several months ago.
The tournament victors will walk away with the top prize of $500, 000 and a trophy; the runners-up will take home $200, 000 and a trophy while the two semi-finalists will cart off $50, 000 each and a trophy.
County winners will receive $10, 000 while several individual prizes are at stake.
Royston Rajpaul of GT&T and Marketing Manager of GTM Anita Shivprashad both stated that their companies were pleased to be associated with the tournament and pledged their companies continued support to the sport.
Andrea Jodhan-Khan, Marketing Coordinator of Hand-in-Hand, spoke of her company’s support to sports generally in Guyana and wished the various teams’ success in the competition.
She expressed admiration of the initiative by GTA, and said she thought it was an excellent move to run off another big nationwide tournament.
President of the GTA and the Guyana Softball League, Halim Khan, in his brief remarks, thanked the sponsors for coming on board and promised that his association will ensure a well organized tournament.
