Two teenagers accused of robbing a man while using violence were yesterday granted $25,000 bail each when they appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on August 28 in Essequibo the duo, aged 14 and 16, robbed Foster James of a cell phone and cash valued $12,000 and immediately before the robbery used personal violence on him.
The two accused were not required to plead to the indictable charge of robbery with violence when it was read to them by the acting chief magistrate.
James was not present at court.
Attorney-at-law Mohamed Zafar who represented the defendants made an application that his clients be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that they have no previous convictions, have a fixed place of abode, pose no risk of flight and have been cooperating fully with the police in their investigations.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the virtual complainant’s cell phone has since been recovered and is lodged at the Brickdam Police Station.
Telford had no objection to the bail application made by the attorney.
The two teens were later placed on $25,000 bail each. Their matter was transferred to the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court for September 16.
