The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and Caribbean Press are hosting a creative writing workshop for aspiring writers.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) news release, the exercise is aimed at developing their writing skills. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony said it “seeks to generate creative writing in Guyana and is the beginning of a revolution aimed at unleashing Guyanese creativity.” The workshop is being held at the Carifesta Sports complex and at its close outstanding pieces produced would be published in the Caribbean Press.
GINA said the idea to publish outstanding pieces in Caribbean Press was an idea birthed by David Dabydeen, during Carifesta X, which as hosted in Guyana. The publishing house was established after it had been noted that pieces by Caribbean authors were being refused by several publishing houses, resulting in a decline in Caribbean publications by both emerging and mature writers.
Anthony noted that Caribbean Press started with 35 books from the 15th century to present day. Eleven of those books have been published and are in circulation. Twelve more are expected to be issued this year. He also said the ministry is encouraging the publication of more contemporary writing.
Additionally, the ministry will be hosting a Festival of Words in December, to commemorate the death anniversary of National Poet Martin Carter. Outstanding pieces from the workshop will be read at the festival. “Other mature writers will also be participating in this event,” the release said. Several pieces will also be incorporated in a special book to be published, including pieces from Guyanese youths.
Anthony said the workshop will be held annually. He also urged participants to “learn as much as possible from the facilitators,” in order to boost the skills that can allow them to pursue careers in writing.
