St John’s College has recorded significantly improved performances at this year’s CSEC examination, with an 86.3% pass rate in Grades One to Three passes compared with 67% last year.
A total of 52 students from the school wrote CSEC and 57 of them gained grades one to three in five and more subjects. Headmistress Joy Nurse and teacher Ashraf Ali were commended for their time and support that that they gave to the class of 2010, which is said to have done the school proud.
“I feel that it doesn’t matter what school you go to, once you study hard and apply yourself anything is possible,” said Steve Dey, who gained five distinctions and three Grade Ones. Dey, 16, of Stevedore Housing Scheme, was the school’s top student. He said it felt “great” after all the hard work he put into his studies. He wrote eight subjects in the science field. Dey said that he hoped to become a doctor. His current plans include CAPE studies at Queen’s College before heading to the University of Guyana to study medicine.
He added that it was hard work and dedication that allowed him to pass his examination. “During the day when, they didn’t have subjects, I studied from the text book and I studied late at night.”
But he noted that his success was not achieved all on his own and credited his mother and his teachers for his success.
His mother, Jacqueline Alkins, said that she was proud of his performance, especially since he gave up sleep many nights to study. Alkins pointed out that Dey would be studying late into the night, sometimes getting only two hours rest before getting ready for school the next day. Dey’s father too was full of praise for the work his son had put in. “We were surprised! We know he had it in him but the hard work he put in was well rewarded,” Mark Dey said.
Other outstanding performances at the school were Joel Sukra, who wrote eight subjects and gained three Grade Ones with two distinctions and three Grade Twos; and Nakacy Bacchus, who wrote ten subjects and gained two Grade Ones with three distinctions and five Grade Twos.
