Abigail Arthur, who is accused of causing the death of Dindyal Chetram as a result of dangerous driving, was yesterday placed on $200,000 bail after she was arraigned before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Arthur, an income tax officer and UG student, of 2750 Park Lane South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, is alleged to have committed the offence on August 23, at Providence, East Bank Demerara. Police contend that she drove motor car PLL 2995 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing Chetram’s death. She pleaded not guilty.
Attorney Neil Bollers, who represented Arthur, told the court that she stood ready and willing to vigorously defend herself of the offence for which she was accused. Bollers also said that the circumstances surrounding the man’s death “was entirely his fault.” According to him, Chetram was in the middle of the road and as a result caused the accident.
Bollers asked that Arthur be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that she posed no risk of flight, had no previous convictions and had been fully cooperating with the police in their investigations.
The prosecutor told the court that on the day in question, at about 10:20am, Arthur was driving north along the eastern carriageway at a fast rate and lost control of her vehicle, which resulted in the death of Chetram.
He was later taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The prosecution had no objection to the bail application made by the attorney.
The matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrates’ Court for October 29.
