BRISTOL, England, CMC – Teenaged Leeward Islands batsman Chesney Hughes stroked a masterful, unbeaten 96 to help set up Derbyshire’s stunning 54-run win over Gloucestershire inside two days on Wednesday.
With Derbyshire trailing by 112 runs on first innings in the County Championship Division Two clash, the 19-year-old left-hander produced a classy innings to propel the visitors to 236 all out in their second innings at the County Ground at Nevil Road.
Hughes, who scored a pair in his last game, slammed 13 fours and a six in a knock that spanned 229 minutes and required 156 balls, and which held the Derby innings together.
Set a seemingly uncomplicated 125 to win, Gloucestershire crashed to 70 all out with Tim Groenewald (4-22) and Graham Wagg (3-31) destroying the innings.
New Zealander Hamish Marshall top scored with 44 from 55 balls but was the penultimate wicket to fall.
