Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson granted a 25-year-old man $75,000 bail when he on Friday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to a charge of unlawful wounding.
It is alleged that on August 28 at Grove, East Bank Demerara, Andriff Gillard of 266 Third Street, Grove unlawfully and maliciously wounded Ramon Brito. Gillard, a labourer, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Gillard’s attorney, Adrian Thompson told the court that his client had been placed on $10,000 station bail and has since been cooperating with the police in their investigations. He has also been reporting to the police station when requested to do so. Thompson also told the court that his client, who is known by the virtual complainant (VC), had a dispute over an amplifier but that he would present other details about the matter at trial.
In response, the VC told the court that he had lent the defendant $39,000 and he had asked him to repay the sum on the day of the incident. After he asked for his money about three times, the complainant said, Gillard began to hit him about the body with a Guinness bottle he had in his hand. Brito said a scuffle soon ensued and the defendant, who was also armed with a razor, slashed him.
However, Thompson disputed the VC’s account and told the court that the complainant had problems with other persons who inflicted the injuries on him. The prosecutor did not object to bail but submitted that it be granted at a substantial sum.
Gillard was then ordered to appear in the Providence Magistrate’s Court on October 29.
