Ten senior officers of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) graduated from the Senior Command and Staff Course (SCSC) Number 10 last Friday at Base Camp Stephenson.
According to a release from the GDF, the training is the highest level of internal training conducted by the force and prepares its officers to function in command and staff appointments across the full spectrum of military operations.
GDF Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best charged the graduates to create new work processes which would improve the force’s accountability systems, reduce wastage and pilfering and ensure that organisational structures are compatible with the changes in the environment.
Further Best told them that the course would have provided them with a sense of expanded spectrum of threats and capabilities, preparing them for any security challenge and eventualities. He further noted that in the light of new security challenges, command leadership and staff competencies had to increase.
Meanwhile, the Commodore also gave his commitment to the sustenance of the programme which he said would continue to develop officers for the larger challenges of leadership in the force. Further, he emphasised that all officers at the rank of captain, who would have completed two years, be made available to attend the training course.
Major Lorraine Foster became the first female to be adjudged Best Graduating Student, Major Michael Shahoud was the runner-up best graduating student while Major Delbert George won the prize for the Best Service Paper.
