Guyana Prize to resume this year – Creighton

Steps have already been taken for the resumption of the Guyana Prize for Literature this year, according to Al Creighton Secretary of the Management Committee.

Creighton admitted there has been a delay in the announcement, but emphasized that the “process has begun”.  He told Stabroek News yesterday that the Committee is not yet at the point where it can advertise.

Creighton said the prize has not been removed and or replaced by similar initiatives as suggested. Referring to a letter which appeared in this newspaper yesterday, he said too that he is unaware of any link between the delay in the prize and the cancellation of government advertising in the private media.

Recipient of the prize Ruel Johnson had again questioned in a letter what had happened sine the prize was last awarded in 2006. Johnson also spoke of a link between what he called the removal of the prize and the “effective cancellation of government ads in the [free] press”.
