The Beepat Scorpions basketball team has risen from the obscurity which seemed to have plagued them in the recent past to become the number one Division Three team in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Open and Division Three Leagues.
They have managed to maintain an unbeaten record since the start of the league and are currently relishing the fact that they are the only undefeated Division Three team in the league so far.
Since the league’s restart at the Burnham Court under the banner Pepsi Street Basketball Series and playoffs the Beepat Scorpions have continued their winning ways with victories against Colour Panthers (71-52) and Courts Pacesetters (80-65).
In total since the start of the league, the Beepat Scorpions have accumulated eight wins, making them the undisputed Division Three league champions, despite having one game remaining on the league schedule against Melanie Patriots on Saturday.
The Beepat Scorpions’ closest rivals in the Division Three League are the Ravens, who have one loss, which they suffered against Scorpions in the early stages of the league.
A loss to the Melanie Patriots on Saturday would mean a tie in points between the Beepat Scorpions and the Ravens. However, this will not affect the Scorpions’ position on top of the league since they defeated the Ravens and will still be named league champions.
As it stands, the other front runners include Melanie Patriots and the Courts Pacesetters.
The four top teams in the Open league, along with the Division Three league will be progressing to the playoff stages which are scheduled to begin at the end of the leagues.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport via telephone, Beepat Scorpions coach, Vijay Panday revealed that this was the first time the Scorpions have won the Division Three league since the club was founded adding that he was very satisfied with the performance since the club is “now on a rebuilding process.”
The Open and Division Three leagues will continue today with two Open match-ups between Courts Pacesetters and Eagles followed by the night’s feature game between Ravens and Colours Panthers.
