LUCAS STOCK INDEX
In week five of August 2010, the Lucas Stock Index declined by 2.87 percent to end the month at 111.86. The decline in the index resulted from the sharp reversal in the price of DIH stocks which fell by over 16 percent from the close of the previous week. The gain of 1.88 percent by the stocks Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) was insufficient to offset the loss in value of DIH stocks. The successive losses in the last two weeks of August caused the index to reverse the gains it had made in previous weeks, putting the gain for the year at 11.86 percent. This decline has caused the yield to fall to under three times that of the risk-free Treasuries with maturity in August 2010.
