TORONTO, Canada, CMC – Jason Holder enhanced his reputation with a miserly spell of fast-medium bowling, but the West Indies High Performance Centre were set-back on their tour of Canada, when the hosts beat them by three wickets yesterday.
The 18-year-old collected three wickets for nine runs from 10 overs as Canadia, chasing a modest 119 for victory from their allocation of 50 overs, reached the target with eight balls to spare at the Malton Cricket Ground.
Holder swung the ball prodigiously in helpful conditions, undermining the Canadians who crashed to 76 for six.
But the HPC failed to complete the demolition job, as Jimmy Hansra gathered 30 not out, and farmed the bowling in the closing overs to limp Canada to their target.
Shannon Gabriel also distinguished himself with his pace and his hostility, which were clearly unsettling for the Canadian batsman, although he had to settle for final figures of one for 33 from 10 overs. Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul supported with the flattering figures of one for 10 from his 10 overs. Earlier, Rajendra Chandrika topscored with 28 after the visitors’ won the toss and chose to bat.
Ashley Nurse and Nkrumah Bonner contributed 18 runs apiece, Kieran Powell made 17, Devon Thomas 15, and Shane Dowrich, 10.
Rizwan Cheema, the Canada captain, was his side’s most successful bowler with four for 20 from seven over.
Parth Desai took two for 18 from 10 overs.
The next match for the HPC is a Twenty20 contest against Bermuda tomorrow.
