Igor bringing heavy rainfall
Category 4 Hurricane Igor has sparked concerns about possible flooding in the Caribbean, including in quake-devastated Haiti. The storm, swirling in the central Atlantic, strengthened further early Monday.
Forecasters said Igor, which could become a category 5 hurricane, could brush the northern Caribbean, possibly heading toward Bermuda afterwards.
Hurricane Igor was not expected to hit land directly.
But its approach has raised concern in the region about the torrential rains that it could bring with it.
There is also a new storm coming behind Igor.
Tropical Storm Julia was projected to become a hurricane in the next couple of days, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Centre.
Haitians prepare
The Haitian government yesterday made plans to relocate thousands of homeless Haitians still living in displaced camps.
Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency has already declared an “orange alert”, warning that parts of the country could be prone to flooding as a result of heavy rains expected from Hurricane Igor. A spokeswoman for the agency has advised the general public to “listen to an-nouncements, follow instructions and prepare to relocate if necessary”. The official, Nadia Lochard, said that people living in camps that face the danger of flooding could be asked to relocate.
