With six wins and four runner-up positions the Guyana Defence Force Boxing Gym garnered 16 points to emerge the winning gym of the Michael Parris National Open Boxing Championships which concluded Sunday night at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
With five points, from one win and three runner-up places, the Republican Gym trailed GDF while Harpy Eagles Gym placed third position with four points.
Forgotten Youth Foundation took the fourth place spot with two points from a single win.
However, over in the junior category it was FYF that ruled the clan with seven points, followed by the Essequibo Boxing Gym (5), Harpy Eagles (4) and Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym (1).
Adding four points to GDF’s tally was lightweight boxer Clevlon Rock who with his two wins was awarded the Best Boxer title in the senior category, while over in the junior category FYF’s Stephon Joseph secured a similar award.
Rock buffed up his performance at the tournament on Sunday night when he took his third consecutive win for the year, against Republican Gym’s Nankumar Singh. In a controversial fight, as had overshadowed the last two fights between the two, decisions were once again contested when victory was declared in Rock’s favour.
However, when order was restored to the disconcerted representatives from both sides, the decision remained solid declaring Rock as the winner of the bout, despite Nankumar’s stellar performance throughout the fight that had him raining blows to a towering Rock.
Over in the junior category, fighting in the 118-125 lbs division, Joseph despite a losing first round to Travis Fraser, rebounded from the moment the bell announced the second round to turn the table. Suddenly finding his footing, Joseph ended the bout 24 seconds into the second round, as Fraser was floored by the shower of head blows that Joseph delivered.
In the featherweight division, Delon Allicock contending against Benjamin Henry was evidently the more experienced of the two and prevailed with a win over Henry.
Junior welterweight GDF boxer Bert Braithwaite, following his one-sided win from Mark George on Saturday night, once again proved too much for his opponent and forced the referee to call a halt to his rampage against gym mate Romono Clarke.
In another bout that the referee stopped, Eon Bancroft prevailed over his gym mate, Lester Fraser. And Devon Boatswain won unanimously from Republican Alfred Benjamin, while Markember Pierre of GDF floored his gym mate, Samuel Primo in 2:02 of the third round.
The heavyweight division saw a bout between two pugilists from the Republican Boxing Gym, Trelon Munroe and Brian Bailey. By unanimous decision Munroe prevailed while Kemol Emmanuel earned a decision over his gym mate, Murtland McDonald to bring the curtains down after three nights of action.
