The Melanie Patriots did what all the previous challengers of the Beepat Scorpions Division Three team could not do.
Saturday night in a match of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Division Three and Open leagues, Melanie Patriots handed Beepat Scorpions their first defeat winning 68-65 at the Burnham Court.
This loss in their last Division Three game of the league has blemished the Beepat Scorpions’ winning record and brought an end to their eight-game winning streak.
However, despite the result, the Beepat Scorpions still emerged winners of the Division Three League, with a record of eight wins and one loss.
Saturday night’s lone encounter between the Scorpions and Patriots was evenly matched on the scoreboard at the end of the first two quarters. The first period ended with both teams on 16 points, while second quarter ended in similar fashion with the scores 33-33 at the halftime whistle.
The third quarter saw the Patriots taking charge of the game and outscoring their opponents to end the quarter with a 50-41 points lead.
They carried the same intensity into the fourth quarter and even though the Beepat Scorpions fought their way back into the game, they couldn’t deliver that final sting to the Patriots.
The consistency of Scorpions’ Shelroy Thomas was on display once again as he netted 31 points, ending the game with another game high total. Thomas’ teammate Lance Gouveia assisted with 14 points.
Kurtley English was the lead contributor for the Melanie Patriots with 27 points while Maxwell Thomas pitched in with 15 points for the winning side.
