A timber truck toppled somewhere along the Kwakwani-Ituni trail about 8pm last night and the driver was killed, police sources said.
Up to press time, the driver was unidentified and it appeared that they would be unable to retrieve the body last night because the truck, which pinned the body, was partially submerged in a creek, a source said.
An Ituni resident told Stabroek News that the accident occurred close to a temporary bridge that was constructed at an area where recent floods washed away a section of the road. The resident, who asked not to be named, said that apparently the driver was new and did not know the road and missed the turn-off to the temporary bridge. Due to the rains, the sides of the road were filled with water and this was where the truck plunged into, she said.
The truck reportedly belonged to a Chinese company. The resident added that the driver remained missing while a Chinese man who was in the truck complained that his chest was hurting. “Logs loose up all over the road,” the woman told Stabroek News.
Police have journeyed to the area to investigate.
