“I tek de clothes fuh wear it meh worship,” was the response given by a man accused of stealing a quantity of clothing from his brother when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry-Sewnarine on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The man was later admitted to bail in the sum of $60,000.
The allegation is that on September 7 at Georgetown, Andy Gonsalves of 197 Oronoque Street, Queenstown, Georgetown stole a quantity of clothing valued $100,000, property of Brian Gonsalves.
The defendant initially entered a guilty plea to the charge of simple larceny, saying that he stole the clothing to wear them.
“I tek it fuh wear it meh worship,” the man exclaimed.
After being told by the acting chief magistrate that the offence carries a maximum of five years imprisonment, the accused changed his plea to not guilty.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford in his address to the court said that the items were not recovered. He added that he had no objections to the accused being placed on bail.
The defendant was later granted $60,000 bail. His matter was transferred to Court Ten for statements today.
