The Guyana Amateur Body Building & Fitness Federation (GABBFF) has shortlisted an eight-member squad for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Bodybuilding championships in Aruba from September 22-26.
The list was compiled after the GABBFF held its Senior National Championships, dubbed ‘Mission of Mega Proportions’, last Sunday at the National Cultural Centre. Heading that list is two-time Mr Guyana and 2009 CAC silver medallist Clint Duke and 2009 Mr Guyana Oswin Jones.
Duke will be competing in welterweight and Jones in the heavyweight divisions. Others making the cut are Devon Davis (Mr Guyana bantamweight 2010), Alisha Fortune (Miss Guyana Physique and CAC fifth place finalist in 2009), 2010 Miss Guyana runner up Kascia Beaton, Marlon Bennett (2009 CAC silver medalist and this year’s Mr.Guyana lightweight winner), Curtis Mc Kenzie (Mr Guyana Men’s Fitness) and under-21 athlete Rudolph Blackman.
However, this list may go under the knife if the GABBFF does not garner US$10,000 to facilitate travel for the bodybuilders, according to GABBFF president Fiona Harris.
Additionally, Harris, revealed to Stabroek Sport yesterday that she has penned a letter to Sport Minister Dr Frank Anthony to enlist his help so that Guyana may host the 40th anniversary of the games.
According to Harris, this can only be done if Guyana is present at the general
council meeting which will be held on the morning of the championships in Aruba. Guyana hosted the championships in 2004 and it was considered one of the best organized and therefore it would be an honour for Guyana to host it once again on a very important anniversary.
She also believes that the opportunity can give the sport the shot in the arm it requires at this time. She pointed out also that the association is seeking sponsorship and will be embarking on other fundraising ventures starting with a fitness walk on Sunday in the National Park.
