The Public Works Ministry on Friday issued an advisory to residents in areas across the country to take precautions ahead of another spring tide period, even as some communities are still reeling from the recent assault.
The communities cited in the alert include River View, Ruimveldt, Herstelling, Farm, Craig, Diamond and Friendship on the East Bank Demerara. Residents are being asked to take extra precautions during the period September 20 to September 27.
The Works Services Group/Sea Defence Division of the Ministry of Public Works and Communication issued the alert through the Government Information Agency (GINA).
On the West Coast and West Bank Demerara, the areas on notice include Vive La Force, Catherina/Lorenzo, Vriesland Wales/Patentia, Sisters’ Village, Belle Vue, Bagotville/La Grange, Schoonard/Good Fortuin, Pouderoyen/ Versailles and Vreed-en-Hoop/Plastic City.
Warning was also sounded to persons in the East Coast Berbice area, namely, the communities of Goed Bananen Land, Friends, Brothers, Lansdale, Heatburn and Glasgow. In Leguan the areas include Vrouw Anna, Henrietta and Maryville.
Further, residents in Mahaica and the Helena/Mosquito Hall areas were also put on notice, but areas that have not been mentioned are also expected to take precautions during the period of spring tide.
GINA reported that the government had released special funds to execute works in the affected areas, some of which have commenced and others of which are to commence shortly.
