Winston Forrester followed up his performance at this year’s 24th annual Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Cricket Tournament in Barbados with a century yesterday in the second division Haier Cup at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground.
Forrester and skipper Carlos Jadanauth shared in a century partnership for the first wicket before Forrester was dismissed for 108, which included 14 fours and a six. Jadanauth was left unbeaten on 93 as his team steamrolled Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) by reaching reach 304-3 from 40 overs.
Useful contributions also came from Alex Ramalho (37), who hit the biggest six of the match that ended up on Regent Street, Raj Nanan (26 not out) and Dellon Fernandes (22).
Shivdat Motee, Navin Lawson and Basheer Khan ended with figures of 1-12 (1), 1-59 (8) and 1-72 respectively.
In response, MCYS managed 156 from 30.4 overs with only Mark Cumberbatch and Nkosi Whyte showing any fight with scores of 39 and 32 respectively. GCC spinner Raphael Singh was the chief wicket-taker with 4-56 while Nanan and Trevon France supported with 3-25 and 2-21.
Over at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground, Third Class defeated DCC by one wicket with five balls to spare. DCC, batting first, reached 189 all out in 34.1 overs with Jamal `Bitter Man’ Hinckson stroking 96, which consisted of nine sixes and four fours.
Alvin Castello grabbed 3-25 from six overs while Mark Adams, Larry Panchand and Andre O’Neil took two wickets apiece for Third Class, who, in reply, reached 195-9 from 39.1 overs.
Castello returned with the bat to top score with 89 not out while Trevor Hussein supported with 29.
Bowling for DCC Kevin George took 3-26 (5) and Edward Burnett 3-42.
Over at the Ghandi Youth Organisation ground, the home team beat Police by one wicket with four balls to spare. Police, batting first, amassed 244-9 from their 40 overs with Cecil Adams stroking 94.
Shameer Fazal supported with 42 while Ricardo Devers chipped in with 21 not out.
Derrick Kowlen and Patrick Bradford were the main wicket-takers with 3-23 and 2-31 respectively. Vijay Gangaram (69 not out) and Tagenarine Chanderpaul (63) led GYO’s response of 245-9 from 39.2 overs.
Abdool Rahim added 33 while Latchman Persaud snared 5-38 for Police.
At the Camp Ayanganna ground, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) went down by 63 runs to Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC). GNIC’s Sean De Souza scored an enterprising 77 while national under-19 opener Quincy Ovid-Richardson, 44 and captain Collis Butts, 27 not out paced GNIC to 211 all out.
Travis Blyden took 4-42.
GDF in reply could only muster 148 from 30.3 overs with Paul Castello, 28, Marcus Watkins, 23 and Sherwin Mc Almont, 24 not out.
Premchand Sukhdeo had the miserly figures of 5-24 and Ranole Bourne, 2-39.
