The Guyana Teachers’ Union has announced the passing of one of its former Presidents, Clement Rodney who died on last Sunday in the United States.
According to a release from the GTU, Rodney known as Bhagee or Bar served as President from 1976 to 1980 and was one of the founder members of its Upgrading/Foundation Programme for unqualified and under-qualified teachers in the 1970s which enabled them to gain entry into the Cyril Potter College of Education.
It was noted that Rodney came through the ranks of the union serving with distinction as Branch Chairman and General Council Representative, Emergency Executive Council member, 2nd Vice President and 1st Vice President before becoming President. He was also a teacher at Morawhanna, Litchfield and St Ambrose Primary Schools.
Books of condolence which were opened at the GTU Hall, Woolford Avenue and the Litchfield Primary School, West Coast Berbice will be available between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm until today.
