-GTTA gives green light
Caribbean Under-13 girls’ singles champion Chelsea Edghill and the region’s number two boys’ Under-13 player Jamaal Duff have been given the green light to participate in the 10th Latin American Pre-Cadet (11-13 years) and Under-10 championships scheduled for the Dominican Republic next month.
According to General Secretary of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Godfrey Munroe, the executives of the association met recently and decided that the two young racquet wielders, who qualified for the tournament earlier this year, would take part in the singles and mixed doubles competitions.
Edghill and Duff earned the right to participate in the singles competition at the upcoming Latin American Table tennis Union Pan American championships when they placed first and second at this year’s Caribbean Pre Cadet tournament in Utuado, Puerto Rico.
Edghill became the latest Caribbean table tennis champion from Guyana following her 11-5, 11-3, 9-11, 11-7 and 11-6 win over Carla Brito while Duff too reached the finals of the Under-13 boys competition before losing 9-11, 9-11, 9-11, 8-11 to the former World Hopes cadet player Brian Afanador of Puerto Rico.
The two players will again be accompanied by Coach Lisa Lewis, who played a key role in Edghill’s victory in Puerto Rico while GTTA’s assistant secretary/treasurer Deidre Edghill will manage the team.
The senior Edghill will represent Guyana at a meeting of the Latin American Table Tennis Union (LATTU) scheduled for October 5 and is scheduled to leave on October 4 while the coach and the two players will depart Guyana on October 7.
The tournament, which ends October 10, will be preceded by a three-day training camp from October 2-4 for 16 players drawn from LATTU and the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) while a general one-day camp for all the players will be held on October 5.
The team events will get underway on October 7 with the doubles events starting on October 8 and the singles the following day.
The Latin-American Pre Cadet Championship will be conducted according to current rules and regulations issued by ITTF for international competitions and at stake will be trophies and medals while all the players taking part will receive certificates of participation.
