Some 30 secondary school teachers last week began training in the area of health and family life education (HFLE) as the Ministry of Education moves to pilot the subject in 30 schools.
“The intention is to pilot the Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) curriculum as a timetabled subject in grade 7 in 30 secondary schools in eight education districts,” a press release from the Government Information agency said. It is being implemented under the theme ‘transforming our classrooms through health and family life education’ by the ministry in collaboration with the Guyana HIV/AIDS Reduction and Prevention Programme, Phase II and is funded by the United States President Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief through the United States Agency for International Development.
Minister Shaik Baksh said the 30 teachers will not only be limited to teaching at their schools but will be called upon to teach in other schools. They will be given credits for their work as in a continuous professional development programme. He also said that an evaluation will be carried out after one year to determine the programme’s effectiveness and its and continuation.
